Engelhartstetten

 - Information & Lodging

The municipality Engelhartstetten is in close proximity to the national park of the Danube Flood Plains, in front of the gates of Vienna.

But not only the national park Danube flood plains with its tropical-like flora and numerous kinds of animals, also the two Baroque monasteries Schloss Hof and Niederweiden, situated in the close surroundings, are amongst the most interesting things the March region has to offer to its visitors.

In 1441, Engelhartstetten has officially been mentioned as "Engl Hartstetten" for the first time. The name hints towards the German origin and an ancient settlement. In the early medieval times, the fate of Engelhartstetten has probably been closely tied to the one of Niederweiden - a former significant town with a defensive castle. In 1865, the Earl Rüdiger von Starhemberg acquired both municipalities, and in 1693, the castle Niederweiden has been built by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach.
Under the rule of Maria Theresia, the hunting castle has been rebuilt and an additional floor added. A picturesque dome hall has been added by Jean Pillement. The still originally preserved "Rauchkuchl", an old kitchen situated next to the castle, is a true Baroque gem in the Marchfeld region which is rich in building monuments.
