The white stork is one of the most recognizable of all birds. Tall and stately, it has played an important symbolic role in many cultures. White storks are highly migratory, leaving Europe for Africa in the fall. On their way south they birds travels across Italy, France, Spain, Morocco and Mauritania. Around spring they return to spend their summers in Europe - and one of their habitats are the wetlands and marshes around Saxen.
Since 1964 storks have been nesting in the artifical eyrie on the roof of Saxen´s Elementary School.
Saxen's coat of arms include a white stork to illustrate the close bond between this animals and the people.
