Windhaag

Windhaag, the snug holiday resort in immediate vicinity to Perg, has 1,300 inhabitants. It nestles in lower Mühlviertel´s granite foothills at 514 m above sea level.

Windhaag is a perfect place to take a look back in time and to find out more about the region´s eventful history. Admire a great many of historical buildings and the ruins of the former Windhaag Castle.

The town center with a splendid fountain, the parish church and the little affiliated church of Altenburg rank among Windhaag´s most precious possessions.

Altenburg Affiliated Church
In its interior this outstanding church features marvelous fresco paintings in the crypt area (going back to 1512) and the recently renovated, 300-year old organ with its picturesque decoration. The ancient church bell (weight: 100 kg) dates back to 1340. Altenberg is a must-see for culture and art fans!

Windhaag is the ultimate spot for the most relaxing holidays in summer and winter alike. Cultural highlights, events, recreational amenities and genuine Upper Austrian hospitality await you. And the local inns are looking forward to spoiling you with culinary delights and regional specialties ...

Cultural Highlights & Recreational Amenities

Lovely Perg is towering above the Mühlviertler Quell Region, embedded in lower Mühlviertel´s gently rolling hills.

On fog-free days the stunning panorama is almost incomparable! Windhaag offers a breathtaking view of the entire Machland area, the Alpine foothills of Lower Austria and the Alpine chains between Ötscher peak and Traunstein mountain.

Windhaag is steeped in history and a truly unique insider tip for culture fans. Just follow the tracks of the former dukes and ancient monasteries.

Castle Ruins
The Windhaag Ruins are embedded in a little basin, only a few walking minutes from the town center. 700 years ago the splendid castle was built - unfortunately the building went to ruin over the years. For safety reasons it´s not allowed to enter the castle. Outside you find some beautiful and idyllic spots, ideal for a little break.

Parish Church (former Abbey), Guards´ Armor, Heimatstube Local Heritage Museum, Mount Calvary Chapels of Windhaag and Altenburg, Hubertus Chapel.
