Retz wins hearts without even trying! Come and experience the charm of this lovely town.
Retz, which was founded at the end of the 13th century by Count Berchtold von Rabenswalde is one of the oldest towns in the north of Lower Austria.
In 1483 Retz was given the status and rights of a town.
In medieval times Retz was given the right to trade wine. Today you can see impressive houses illustrating the wealth of their former owners.
However, Retz lost this right, and there was no money to build new houses. This is the reason, why the medieval buildings were preserved and remained until today.
The people of Retz know how to keep traditions and customs alive! Religious and other festivals, such as the wine harvest festival play an important role throughout the year.
People say that Retz has more paths underground than other towns have streets. Why not come and see for yourself! One fact, anyway, cannot be denied, and that is that the shafts are extremely big: you could even ride through them on horseback and with a carriage!
Retz comprises three "districts".
The "town of Retz", the "old town of Retz" (they had their own mayor until 1941) and the Wieden.
The old town is the place where this year´s Pumpkin Festival takes place.
Retz is surrounded by picturesque villages that create a wonderful picture of harmony whilst expressing their unique character.
Who doesn´t want to escape the hectic pace of everyday life for a while! You can go for a romantic stroll through the vineyards, or walk along the famous Kellergassen lanes along the wine-cellars.
This is a place where the people still live in harmony with nature.
