The community (27 km²) is situated on the southern plateau of the Waldviertel, which slopes down to the Danube and into the Nibelungengau area.
Artstetten is about 14 km from Melk.
The community contains 14 villages with about 1200 inhabitants. Artstetten is very close to Maria Taferl - a well-known place of pilgrimages and excursions above the Danube.
In the village Pöbring you can find a romantic castle chapel which in part dates back to the Baroque age and whose choir has been remodeled into a late-Gothic ribbed vault.
