Already the Celts have learned to appreciate the ideal location at the transition of the river, and have settled here long before the Roman camp was built in the 1st century AD.
"A walk in the time of the Romans" - that´s how you can call a visit to Mautern. Continuous excavation work has made Mautern one of the best explored ancient Roman settlements in Austria. Nowhere else in Austria, you will be able to find such impressing remnants of a Roman fortification like here: the Roman city wall, Roman towers and the Roman street give testimony to many centuries of Roman culture.
The Roman museum, newly opened in 1997, shows an impressive collection of the excavation work with about 1500 archaeological finds (the work of the Holy Severin makes our past become alive again).
