Seeboden - "Treasure Island" at Lake Millstatt

GPS assisted treasure hunt

Geocaching

Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunt which uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to hide and seek small items (caches) at different external locations.

In a typical cache, people place small objects in a container and hide it in the environment. Using a handheld GPS unit, the geocacher then marks the waypoint measured in longitude and latitude. This is then recorded on a website, along with written clues to the location, the contents and the significance of the cache. Other geocachers can then search for the cache by entering the waypoint in their own GPS unit.

Once found, the geocacher replaces the treasure with something else (equal in value).

Geocaching is a great outdoor and nature experience for people of all ages.

Handheld GPS units and coordinates are available from the local tourist office.

There are certain moments when the soul reveals its hidden gems....

Seeboden am Millstätter See

The Millstätter See Höhensteig trail reveals a number of hidden and visible gems. Ruby-red garnets can be seen along the trail, often only hidden by a layer of silvery mica slate.

In addition, there are numerous historic rocks along the trail, including "Pechsteine" (Pech = pitch) and "Steinerne Tische" (rock tables), where certain rituals and ceremonies were carried out in pagan times. You will also come across monoliths, which showed people the way to Mirnock Mountain.

Ringed by the Gailtal Alps and the Hohe Tauern and Nockberge mountain ranges, the Millstätter See region is at the very heart of the Carinthian mountains, thus making a paradise for walking and hiking enthusiasts. The Millstätter See Höhensteig trail comprises eight major routes (eight day tours) that take mountain buffs to altitudes of 600 to 2,200 m above sea level (difference in altitude approx. 6,000 m). There's the mighty mountains (3,000 m and more) to the west, Millstätter Alpe to the north, and Mirnock Mountain to the east.
