Villach puts a smile on your face. In Carinthia’s second largest town there is always a reason to celebrate! Located on the border to Italy and Slovenia, Villach makes a charming destination at any time of the year – offering innumerable highlights and attractions for visitors. Local lifestyle and traditions are best experienced in the course of a Carnival parade, or the Villacher Kirchtag Folklore Festival, the biggest of its kind in Austria. In the time before Christmas Villach is illuminated by myriads of lights, and the lovely Christmas market enhances the romantic atmosphere – regardless of the snow cover. Experience heartfelt hospitality and get to know that authentic Villach lifestyle: open-minded, joyful and inviting!
A touch of the Mediterranean
Villach also stands for some 2,100 hours of sunshine a year, for snow and unspoiled nature in abundance! Visitors and locals gather around Hauptplatz, the very center of Villach, and its bustling cafés and bars. Tens of thousands of tourists a year visit the international street art festival and the Alpen-Adria pottery market. Strolling along the streets and lanes, you are well-advised to watch out for the town’s 133 listed buildings.
A touch of nature
The landscape around Villach is as varied as its cultural offering. With an overall length of 16.5 kilometers the Villacher Alpenstraße is one of the most scenic Alpine roads and takes you up Dobratsch Mountain (first Carinthian Nature Park, 2002). Numerous vantage points offer stunning views of Villach and its surrounding villages, of the Karawanken Mountains and the Julian Alps. Thanks to its variety of trails and hiking routes, Dobratsch is highly popular among leisure walkers and professional hikers, as well as cross-country skiing enthusiasts in winter.
Gerlitzen Alpe rises from the shores of Lake Ossiach. The Kanzelbahn cableway is your gateway to Gerlitzen Alpe (1,911 m), where skiing is possible from November till April. And, finally, there are the lakes: Lake Ossiach (perfect for all kinds of watersports) and Lake Faak, the southernmost lake for bathing in Carinthia. Its crystal-clear, turquoise water reflects the lovely landscape around Villach and is favored by a mild, Mediterranean climate.
