These remains were discovered coincidentally when an "emergency excavation" was ordered by the State Department for Historical Monuments between 1990 and 1994. Archeologists in Hallstatt had an amazing opportunity, as a result of these excavations, to document rock formation from Pe-historic right up to modern times. "Discoveries" included: three salt mine forges with a hammer mill and the outer walls of the Habsburg residence from the high Middle Ages. The remains of Roman foundations and stones dating back to pre historic times, as well as numerous metal objects ( from salt mine forges), ceramics (Stone Age, prehistoric, roman, medieval and modern) were also unearthed. Exhibition open free of charge during business hours (daily in summer, Monday - Saturday in winter).
