High above the entrance of the Kaunertal valley is the mighty Burg Berneck castle situated. The castle was first mentioned in 1225 when it was owned by the Messrs. of Berneck. After this dynasty had become extinct the castle was renovated by Hans Wilhelm von Mülilnen in 1437. Between 1499 and 1530 emperor Maximilian I, the great hunter, and his grandson emperor Ferdinand I owned the castle. In the 19th century the castle was left to decay, since 1976 it has been owned by the architect Dipl. Ing. Hörmann who reconstructed the building, the chapel, the chapel's yard, the gothic frescoes and the cloister according to its 1437 state.
