At the heart of nature: Hohe Tauern
Osttirol’s share of the Hohe Tauern National Park is to the south of the Hohe Tauern mountain range and a part of the largest conservation area in the Alps. The Iseltal, Virgental and Kalsertal valleys have been left untouched by mass tourism and therefore provide an unspoiled and carefully farmed mountain scenery for nature enthusiasts and those who love walking, hiking and mountain biking. There are so many things to do and see: Feast your eyes on the sheer beauty of nature, on breathtaking peaks of 3,000 meters and on thundering waterfalls, and do not miss out on the Naturpark-Haus in Matrei, the Osttirodler all-year coaster, and Schloss Bruck castle. In winter it’s all about skiing and snowboarding at the foot of Großglockner and Großvenediger.
Winter break in Osttirol
Großglockner-Resort Kals-Matrei, the largest ski area in the Hohe Tauern Osttirol region, offers an unparalleled skiing and snowboarding experience at the foot of awe-inspiring Großglockner Mountain. 38 kilometers of slopes at altitudes of 1,100 to 2,600 meters ensure skiing pleasures for winter sports enthusiasts of all ages and ambitions. The snow park near the Happeck quad chairlift is the highlight among the snowboarding community. Families especially love the small and intimate Virgen/Prägraten ski area.
The vast powder and corn snow slopes in the Hohe Tauern area have been attracting backcountry skiers and ski mountaineering buffs for several decades now. Being the only valley in Tirol where no ski lifts have been built so far, the Villgratental is renowned for its untouched mountains and fabulous options for ski mountaineering. With 26 kilometers of immaculate tracks Prägraten am Großvenediger is the preferred destination of cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Four fabulous tracks meander through the picture postcard winter wonderland of Virgen, taking in vast plains and lovely woods. The Hohe Tauern Osttirol area boasts a variety of accommodations, ranging from private guesthouses to luxurious spa hotels.
