Where emperors spend their holidays
There are places where you will definitely find stories of times that have long gone by. And the Gasteinertal valley is such a place – still well-known for the most famous spa in Austria. Bad Gastein was once the “diplomatic bath” for the notables in the Habsburg era. Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Empress Elisabeth, Grillparzer and Schopenhauer and a lot more were guests who made the healing baths in Salzburg internationally known. But history goes back even further: Already in the 16th century, the healing springs in Gastein were known for their soothing effect.
And still today, holidays in Bad Hofgastein stand for relaxing hours in sparkling healing water, in the Rock and Alpine Spa, in the healing galleries in Gastein or the Alpine Solar Bath in Dorfgastein. Bad Hofgastein, located at the widest spot of the valley, is the historic center and promises imperial relaxation amid mountains and spas. In summer, there is also a lot to discover high up in the mountains: The ancient stone pine wood on Graukogel peak, the Stubnerkogel round trail with a spectacular suspension bridge as well as numerous mountain biking and climbing routes. After an active day out in the mountains, very brave guests can take a plunge in the Gasteiner bathing lake for some sparkling refreshment.
