Powered by steam engines, the Achensee cog railway makes its way slowly up the mountain, taking visitors from Jenbach to Lake Achensee. The lake itself is a dorado for those who love sailing and surfing, due to favorable wind conditions. However, it is also appreciated for a refreshing swim: The Buchau lakeside beach is especially popular on a hot summer's day.
Those in need of more action and activities will rather head for the mountains. The Rofanseilbahn cable car takes you up to an altitude of more than 2,000 meters within no time at all. Once up there, you may choose from a variety of walking and hiking routes: Why not take the two-hour tour to Rofanspitze (2,259 m) via Mauritzalm and Grubascharte? There are some 500 km of way-marked tracks and trails throughout the Achensee area, including the famous Tirolean Eagle Walk route.
The Buchau public swimming area is popular with families thanks to the warm water (approx. 22 °C) and the shallow lakeshore.
The sprawling village, which is also the region's educational center, has been the final stop of the Achensee steam cogwheel train (the oldest of its kind in Europe!) for more than 120 years now. With an elevation gain of 440 meters and a distance of about 7 kilometers the journey from Jenbach to Eben at Lake Achensee is an unparalleled experience.
The emerald green lake is surrounded by dark coniferous forests, flower-strewn meadows and the mighty Rofan mountains.
Special attractions are the Rofanseilbahn cable car, the "Adlerhorst" vantage platform and the spectacular "Airrofan" skyglider, which offers visitors a bird's eye view of the unique landscape.
Do not miss out on a visit to St. Notburga's, the popular pilgrimage church. Notburga, a common maid in the 13th century, is the most popular patron saint in Tirol. She was always keen to help the poor and to live up to her religious convictions. Discover everything about the patron saint of farmers, maids, the poor and sick at the Notborga Museum in Eben, the only museum in Austria dedicated to a female saint.
At the Edelbrennerei Franz Kostenzer distillery you will be introduced to the world of "Schnaps". Franz Kostenzer offers some 70 different kinds of Schnaps and liqueurs. You are welcome to sign up for a workshop or guided tour.
