350th Anniversary of Maria Trost Pilgrimage Church
Berg bei Rohrbach Maria Trost Church Image

In 2006 Maria Trost Pilgrimage Church celebrated its 350th anniversary!

The church owes its existence to Count Wolf Dietrich von Rödern who, at the end of the Thirty Year’s War, gave his word to have a church built on the mountain peak should Rohrbach be spared from the foraying Swedes. When the enemies came close dense fog started to roll in and the Swedish troops missed Rohrbach. This was considered as sign of Mary’s protection and a church was built in her honor in 1645/1655. The name of the church – Maria Trost (“Our Mother of Consolation”) – is reflected in a painting which Theodorich von Rödern captured in the fight against the Turks and now hangs in a prominent position by the altar. The Virgin Mary statue was made by Johann Worath from Schlag. Theodorich’s sister-in-law, Countess Maria Theresia née Baroness von Oedt, donated a benefice on 18 February 1706 and a beneficiate home in 1708/1709 (renovated and remodeled in 1973). In 1743 the wife of Count Bernhard Franz Anton, Carolina née von Ottislaw, had the church renovated and two frescoes added. In 1765 the church was completely redecorated and remodeled until it reached the form it has today. The high altar and side altars date from that time.
