The Danube always played an important role in Austrian history. As much as 25,000 years BC the first people settled near the Danube. The Venus of Willendorf is a small statue, which dates back thousands of years.
In 996 Austria was first mentioned in a document; it was then called Osterrichi.
Leopold III founded many monasteries, some of which are well preserved and open to the public.
Maximilian I strengthens the power of the house of Habsburg and has a strong influence on the history of Austria.
