A short part of the battlemented parapet near the Hotel Schützen was renovated in 1974 and has since then been accessible for guided tours. It is the battlemented parapet of the old ring wall, in front of the moat, where formally the town stream flowed in between the rocks.
The old battlemented parapet's crenel (on exhibition at the Fricktaler Museum) prevented enemies' bullets from hitting Rheinfeld soldiers. Once one shot had been fired, the muzzle-loader rifle was pulled back from the crenel and the massive wooden cone was turned until the barrel's slot was parallel to the wall - that way the hole was closed. Entry only for guided tours. Please ask for information on city tours at Rheinfelden tourism.
