Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See

This popular museum has been enlarged and was reopened in summer 2008!

Kochel am See was the second home of the Munich painter Franz Marc. When he was young, his family would spend their holidays on the Staffelalm hut – a place he would later return to even as a student. He generally found inspiration in the wonderful mountains of the Tölzer Land region. Many of his paintings in fact represent real places, mountain ranges and peaks of the area around Kochel, Benediktbeuern and Bad Tölz.

70 years after his death in Verdun, the Franz Marc museum was introduced in 1986, overlooking the Kochelsee lake. The museum has since been restored and enlarged and is now one of the most important cultural institutions in the area. In summer 2008, the new exhibition room was opened which now boasts over 700 square meters of exhibition space. It now also includes the unique collection of Etta and Otto Stangl, whose foundation made the enlargement possible.

The house is designed to be a “living museum“ featuring art that is constantly evolving and interacting with its time of origin. The exhibition presents art by Franz Marc and his groundbreaking Blaue Reiter art circle, as well as many works of art by the Die Brücke expressionist group including familiar names such as Erich Heckel, Paul Klee and Willi Baumeister.

In order to make the exhibition accessible to a broader public, the old part of the house (dating back to 1900) has been renovated to host a café, administrative and presentation space as well as many interesting events talking about the life of Franz Marc.

Press Information Tölzer Land

Enjoy and relax in the land of colours

Narrow country roads going through green hills. Behind old deciduous trees a forest lake shimmering in the sun. On the edge of the lake a cosy beer garden with the smell of fresh pretzels. And in the background a white onion church tower in front of a jagged alpine silhouette whetting your appetite for a mountain tour. That’s the stuff holiday dreams are made of. To perfect to be true? Not so in Toelzer Land.
"Everything here is beautiful beyond description", raved the famous German composer R. Wagner in the 19th century, when he spent his holidays in the Hochkopf alpine hut above Lake Walchen (Walchensee) – surrounded by pure nature and close to the clear blue sky. Today, 150 years later, the peaceful spot 40 miles south of Munich is still a feast for the eyes – whether you climb up to the alpine summits as high as 6,000 feet from Benediktenwand to Herzogstand, hike through the charming Loisach Valley (Loisachtal) or swim and bask in the sun at Lake Kochel (Kochelsee).
Only travellers passing through on the highways south are in a hurry. Experts on the region prefer a leisurely pace – on foot or with a bike – to enjoy the scenery with all senses. Because in Toelzer Land at least as important as being on the way is having a break: time for a picnic between buttercups, for a flying stop at a little church by the wayside or for a stroll through neat places such as Bad Toelz.

Experiencing the scenery differently and at first hand: This is what three local authorities are committed to. Every year from mid-May to the end of September, Bad Heilbrunn, Benediktbeuern, and Kochel – in cooperation with the local Centre of Environment and Culture – stage „Nature Summer Loisach Valley“ ("Natursommer Loisachtal"): bird watching trips where you learn who’s chirping how and where, brook safaris exploring the bottom of rivers, herbal classes demonstrating the healing power of plants.
The Days of Roses in Bad Toelz (Toelzer Rosentage) early in June prove vivid imagination: Traditional and modern kinds of roses are in full bloom at this flower festival in Rosenpark and at the Franziskanergarten. Bicycle trips lead to farms with old roses. All year long the vital farms (Vitalhoefe) help holidaymakers to appreciate life in line with nature: homemade bread is as standard as walking barefoot in the morning dew, warm cherry stone cushions in bed and visits to the cowshed.
