The Oderbruch region

In the East of the March of Brandenburg, between Berlin and the Polish boarder offers something to suit every taste: those who love nature will take a trip to the Maerkische Schweiz ("Switzerland of the March of Brandenburg") Nature Park or the Schlaubetal valley. Frankfurt an der Oder is the heart of the region. It used to be a wealthy member of the Hanseatic League and is today the easy gateway from the EU to Poland.

The Oderbruch region is a fertile depression where Berlin´s vegetable supply is grown. In 1736, Friedrich II experienced here a major flooding which , after his coronation, made him commission Leonhard Euler, a mathematician, to create an embankment along river Oder.

The Maerkische Schweiz is a nature park featuring vast forests and narrow gorges and a popular place for rest and recreation for Berliners. Even Theodor Fontane expressed his admiration for the beauty of the regional unspoilt nature.
