Situated on the southern borders of Vallagarina, Ala is an important economic center in this part of the valley. The small town is of Roman origin and boasts one of the most fascinating old towns in Trentino. It is a real gem in terms of architecture, featuring stone paved narrow streets and romantic courtyards. The part of the town dating back to the Middle Ages and the most prosperous period (18th and 19th century) shows palaces and elegant streets: stone portals, wall frescoes, original balconies out of wrought iron tell stories about these prosperous times.
Palazzo Angelini is one of the numerous palaces that remind of the flourishing economic situation (in particular due to the velvet industry). Palazzo de' Pizzini accommodated renowned historical figures such as Napoleon, Mozart and his father (the room they slept in has been preserved) and today is headquarters of the Mozart Foundation, hosting concerts of classical music.
Also worthy of note is the small San Pietro church in Bosco, which is of Roman origin and located further South.
Ala is an ideal base for trips to the Lessini mountains past Valle di Ronchi and Sega di Ala. Ala counts 7,400 inhabitants and is still a well-developed agricultural and trading center.
