Grotto of Castello Tesino - Trentino

Grotte di Castello Tesino

The grottos of Castello Tesino are located in the savage ravine between the mounts Monte Agaro and Monte Coppolo and were discovered in 1926

by the geometer Da Rugna from San Donato in the province of Belluno. Soon after that this cavity was equipped for tourism and from then on it is visited by a lot of speleology lovers and groups. It it about 400 metres long and has not yet been fully explored. The grotto is of carsic origin: the water, particularly rich in carbonic acid and interacting chemically and physically with the limestone rock, dolomitic limestones and the rock composite known as Dolomia del Retico, has realised this cavity and contributed to creating a fairy tale environment with stalactites and stalagmites and other formations of particularly interesting and fascinating colours and forms - a slow work which has lasted several thousands of years. The cavity can be found on maps under the name of Grotta di Castello Tesino, but locally the name of it is more picturesque: Bus de la lora. The grotto in Castello Tesino can be accessed by everybody (children of age not inferior of 8 years). The visit takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Appropriate clothing and shoes are recommended (trekking boots and k-way). You can get there by car driving first to Pustaro following the road to the Brocon pass then turning right and following the signs; then you need to walk along a gravel road for about half an hour.
