Pomarolo

 - Information & Lodging

The name comes from the Latin word "pomarium" which means orchard. Even today the countryside is rich in apples, vineyards and cherries. Until the last century Pomarolo was renowned also for its tobacco that used to be traded everywhere. Many brooks run through the village and in the past they were utilized to produce energy through six watermills (the most ancient dating back to 1259) and contributing to the textile industry; for example the material for the habits of the monks was produced. The parish church was rebuilt in 1768 with the money of the inhabitants who often managed to free themselves from the feudal rule. Pomarolo was also the seat of the Comun Comunale, an ancient and noble institution with the aim of defending the interests of the communities living along the right banks of the River Adige. The quarter of Basiano is the oldest of the municipality with Roman origins and still represents the area that has been best preserved and which spread later on along the brooks and main roads flanking the river, creating in this way rural quarters. The parish church of Saint Cristoforo accessed through the apse in which a distinguished organ considered as the most important in the valley can be found, is of great interest. In the area of Chiusole it is possible to visit the church of Saint Rocco built in 1636 containing some paintings by artists of the 18th century.
