Castel Barco

The ruins of the high polygonal keep, made up of well-cut stones placed one on top of another, has helped scholars determine

the original structure of this castle, which initially consisted only in a tower, used as dwelling, and in a defensive circle of walls (12th century). The other residential buildings and the second circle of walls were added later. Once this structure could be clearly seen here in Castel Barco, too, and testifies that the fortress, located along the river Adige, was then turned into a castle belonging to the family bearing the same name, who later became very powerful. However, the Castelbarcos, divided into eight branches, left the castle after it was plundered and set on fire several times. Nothing has been changed since the 16th century. The building can be reached on foot in about half an hour from Savignano.
