Castel Saiori

The castle Saiori Brentonico, facing the valley of the river Adige,

and the fortress of Serravalle in Castel Chizzola made up a frightening fortified complex. Close to it stood the castle of Dosso Maggiore, which defended the plateau of Brentonico. It´s very difficult to determine the function of its various parts, except for the external walls of the keep, located in the highest point of the fortification, and the ruins of the nearby cistern. The castle, which initially belonged to the powerful Castelbarco family, was later owned by the Venetians, the Habsburgs and many others, until the area was invaded by the French army led by Vendome. During the First World War it was demolished and new bulwarks were erected. Now only ruins remain. It can be reached on foot (1 hour) from the villages of Saccone or Ere, in the village of Brentonico.
