Lake Como is Italy’s third biggest lake and its biggest with regard to the total length of its shoreline, with 170 kilometers in the two provinces of Como and Lecco. The lake’s characteristic Y-shape is due to the shape of the foothills of the Alps that surround the lake. The mountain scenery around it is very varied, with soft, round, grass-covered hills and the jagged rocks so typical of the Dolomites.
The shoreline is packed with picturesque, famous resorts such as Bellagio, Cernobbio, Como, Laglio, Lecco, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Valbrona, Valmadrera and Varenna. The lake has often been praised for its quiet beauty by Italian poets and writers. They all have been inspired by the outstanding scenery surrounding this truly unique lake.
