Holidays Hohe Tauern Osttirol

At the heart of nature: Hohe Tauern

Osttirol’s share of the Hohe Tauern National Park is to the south of the Hohe Tauern mountain range and a part of the largest conservation area in the Alps. The Iseltal, Virgental and Kalsertal valleys have been left untouched by mass tourism and therefore provide an unspoiled and carefully farmed mountain scenery for nature enthusiasts and those who love walking, hiking and mountain biking. There are so many things to do and see: Feast your eyes on the sheer beauty of nature, on breathtaking peaks of 3,000 meters and on thundering waterfalls, and do not miss out on the Naturpark-Haus in Matrei, the Osttirodler all-year coaster, and Schloss Bruck castle. In winter it’s all about skiing and snowboarding at the foot of Großglockner and Großvenediger.

Amazing summer break in the National Park

Glaciers and bizarre rock formations, gently rolling mountain pastures and thundering waterfalls – the Hohe Tauern Osttirol area enchants visitors with an authentic Alpine landscape. The charming little town of Matrei in Osttirol is the main community in this part of the National Park and home to the Nationalparkhaus exhibition center which communicates information on local flora and fauna through changing special exhibitions. The focus in the Hohe Tauern National Park is on its natural treasures, such as the Haslach Waterfall or the Dabaklamm Gorge. Among the most popular hikes are the ascent to Berger Seehütte from Prägraten am Großvenediger or the Eisseehütte tour (trail head: Hinterbichl).

In case your passion is mountain biking, you ought to try the challenging Gornerberg tour starting in Kals am Großglockner, as well as the Virgental cycle trail which winds its way from Matrei to the Umbal Waterfalls. Cycling is permitted throughout the National Park, and there are also easier routes for those who wish to explore the mountain scenery at a more leisurely pace. A holiday in the Hohe Tauern Osttirol area offers a fair share of sports and exercise, including tennis, fishing, horse riding, climbing, swimming, rafting and canyoning.
