Kaunertal Nature Experience

Spreading along the plains of the River Inn at the entrance to the Kaunertal Valley, at an altitude of some 860 meters, the charming villages of Prutz and Faggen make fine destinations for outdoor enthusiasts at any time of the year. Activities include walking and hiking, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding. Nearby Fendels offers outstanding walking and skiing especially for families, while the Kaunertal Glacier ski area (within a 20-minute drive) boasts perfect snow conditions until June. Do not miss out on a visit to the Kaunertal hydroelectric power plant, one of the biggest of its kind in Austria, and a sample of Sauerbrunnquelle mineral water, which was even appreciated by the Emperors Maximilian I and Franz Ferdinand.

From the mountain to the lake

Prutz-Faggen makes a splendid summer destination for sports and relaxation-minded travelers, as well as families. Walkers, hikers and mountain bikers will explore the picturesque Kaunergrat nature park and have a lunch stop at one of the mountain restaurants and lodges serving tongue-tickling food. The Kaunerberg Water Trail makes for a fine family tour, while the Fendlerrunde tour is recommended for serious mountain biking enthusiasts – with stops at the Wiesele ruins and the Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage church. Having spent the day outdoors, there is nothing to beat a refreshing soak in the Prutz outdoor pool or the bathing lake in Ried.
Interested in culture and history? – The Pontlatz Bridge, for instance, is an absolute must-see, as is the nearby Burg Berneck castle in Kauns sitting highly enthroned on a mighty rock. Visitors are welcome to explore the carefully refurbished Gothic rooms and halls with elaborate frescos in the course of guided tours. Living history for the whole family!
