Hiking in the foothills of Großglockner

The 250 kilometer hiking network stretches to the scenic Hohe Tauern National Park, giving an insight into the region's varied fauna and flora. Among the hiking highlights not to be missed are Ködnitzal valley, Böses Weibele peak or Dorfersee Alpine lake where you discover old farmhouses, churches, chapels, mills and water wheels. The Schobergruppe mountain range attracts climbers and alpinists to Kals, boasting 53 mountain peaks above three thousand meters altitude in the southern Hohe Tauern region. Besides climbing and Alpine hiking, mountain bike aficionados will find everything they could possibly desire in Kals and its splendid surroundings. Culture vultures head for the six ancient and recently renovated mills in Kalsertal valley. A highlight in the event calendar is the yearly Mill Festival in Steindorf.

The Großglockner resort Kals/Matrei is a true insider tip for skiers thanks to its beautiful and uncrowded ski slopes. Winter and snow fans can choose from 37 marvelous slope kilometers with plenty of snow until late April. What's more, Kals am Großglockner also has some 25 kilometers of perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails without major changes in altitude, leading right across picture-book winter landscapes.
