The castle was commissioned by Prince Eugen of Savoyen, who defeated the Turkish army. It was designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt between 1714 and 1723.

Due to its incredible beauty the Habsburg family and Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination triggered WW I, chose the castle as their home.
The Upper an Lower Belvedere are connected by a marvellous garden with ponds and mazes. Today they host galleries with Austrian art.
