Kärntnerstrasse / Graben - Austria

Kärntner Straße Avenue
Pedestrian area in the heart of Vienna's inner city!

Vienna's Kärntner Strasse can be compared with Champs Elysées in Paris! The car-free shopping mall is situated between Vienna's State Opera and St.Stephen's square. On the other hand, you find a great variety of haute couture shops within Mariahilfer Strasse avenue.

In Roman times, when Vienna was still called Vindobona, the main "Strata Carinthianorum" was half the size and not in a straight line. Excavations prove that a historic graveyard ("Coloman Graveyard") - that belonged to the Town Hospital - was located here during the Middle Ages, until the beginning of the 16th century.

Since 1974 Kärntner Strasse is a pedestrian area boasting an infinite number of shops, among them the Steffl shopping center featuring a post-modernist building made of glass. This was also the place where Mozart died.
