Graben - Vienna

Graben street begins at St. Stephen´s Square and continues towards the north-west (as far as Kohlmarkt).

The name "Graben" (moat) dates back to the 12th century, when this was actually a moat along the fortress walls. In the 13th century it was filled up and later used as a market square. Today, many magnificent buildings and sights line the Graben, including the Augartenhaus and the Julius Meinl shopping mall. The Pestsäule plague memorial, erected in 1679, is of special interest. The busy Graben street invites to go shopping or to sit down in one of the numerous cafés. The Hawelka Café is only a few meters off Graben, in Dorotheergasse street.
