Zillertal experience: Fügen

Guided walks and hikes, a variety of events and activities for children, and weekly “Tiroler Abend” evening shows including local dance and music performances – Fügen in the Ziller Valley offers it all! The economic center of the Zillertal’s first tourist areas developed on the sediment of the Rischbach stream. While mining was a major source of income back in the early days, the focus today is on winter sports: There are wide and well-prepared slopes for downhill skiing, meandering tracks for cross-country skiing, cleared winter walking trails, and several ice rinks. Summer holidays in Fügen offer an unparalleled mountain experience at moderate temperatures. Explore the fascinating Zillertal world of mountains on foot or by (mountain) bike! The Spieljochbahn is the gateway to Spieljoch, a paradise for families who love walking and hiking and appreciate stunning views. Also visit Austria’s highest mine that is open to the public.

Summer break & nature experience

Thanks to its fantastic sunshine record Fügen has become a popular summer sports resort. Walking trails and mountain bike routes wind their ways through lovely forests, across lush mountain pastures and past charming mountain lodges and restaurants. The Spieljochbahn base station in the very center of Fügen is your gateway to the world of mountains, allowing you to get to an altitude of 2,000 meters within no time. From the top station the summit is accessible within 15 minutes, even for families. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Karwendel Mountains and Lake Achensee – or walk on to Kellerjoch (2,350 m).

Spieljoch Mountain boasts special climbing facilities for children, where young outdoor enthusiasts are introduced to climbing in a playful and relaxed way. Another attraction for families is Austria’s highest mine, accessible from the Spieljochbahn top station within a 45-minute walk. More action and thrilling outdoor activities are offered at the Abenteuer-Erlebnispark Zillertal: Try canyoning and paragliding, and master the high ropes course.

Information on the region

Outstanding skiing at Spieljoch

The small Spieljoch ski area is easily accessible from the very center of Fügen. It offers some 40 kilometers of slopes especially suitable for novice skiers and for families with young children. The seven-kilometer top-to-bottom slope with snow-making machinery is favored by snowboarders and ambitious skiers. Free ski buses operate to and from the neighboring Hochfügen-Hochzillertal ski area, which offers even more variety and challenge.

Those who want to enjoy the picture-postcard winter scenery at a more leisurely pace may join a guided snow-shoe tour or winter walk. In addition, there are about 50 kilometers of cross-country ski tracks, all of them perfectly prepared, meandering in a sunny basin between the villages of Fügen and Kaltenbach. The Erlebnis-Therme Zillertal spa in Fügen makes for an unparalleled bad-weather option for the whole family: There is a quiet sauna and spa area for adults, and an adventure pool with bubble cave, fountains, Lazy River, flood shower, and giant bouncy castle for young visitors.
