There is no evidence as to when people in the area discovered the beneficial effects of the 36 °C mineral water. However, it is known that the spa dates back to the year 1437.

In the Middle Ages the spring was known as Augenquelle ("eye-spring"), as people used to wash their eyes with this highly effective water in order to ensure good eyesight until old age.

Later a vault was built in the place where the spring came out, thus making a splendid spa. In 1492, todays's Gothic church was built.

The crypta underneath the church has only recently been renovated and turned into a baptistry. The medicinal water runs down a stone channel and still attracts many visitors.
