In 1516 the first church of Neustift was dedicated to St. George by the bishop of Brixen. In 1772 the church burnt down.

Already in 1768 was the construction of the church started, as the original building became too small.

Father Franz de Paula Penz was the builder of the impressive church. He was one of the best church builders of the late baroque era in Tirol.

In 1812 Neustift became an independent parish. From the outside St. George's church, a rococo building, looks very simple; the inside is very luxurious and designed with frescoes of famous artists. Neustift's church is Tirol's second largest village church. Franz Senn the "glacier priest" and co-founder of the alpine association is buried in the beautiful cemetery.
