KLETTERSTEIG "Seewand" - Salzkammergut

Obertraun Upper Austria

This rock climb, established by Helmut Putz, mountain guide and director of Tourist Information in Obertraun, is one of the longest, most challenging and rewarding climbs of its kind in the whole of the alps. Difference in altittude is almost 800 metres! Time needed is 4 to 6 hours, and you need to be fit and injury free before you set out! Your reward is the stunning views of Hallstatt and the Inner Salzkammergut for the whole duration of the climb.

Seewand Climb accessible end of June to middle of October.

Start is the large car park and bathing area half way between Hallstatt and Obertraun.

From the summit of the Dachstein (mountain plateau), there is a well-marked 40 minute trail to the Gjaid-alm mountain hut. This is a beautiful trail, and the mountain hut provides excellent food and refreshments. Try the "Kaiserschmarrn" - a delicious regional sweet dish!

5 minutes from here is the cable car which will transport you back down to the valley. Allow 3 to 4 hours if you would prefer to walk down! Latest return by cable car is 5pm!

We hope you enjoy your climbing adventure! Proper equipment needed!
