Arcades - Switzerland

As a historical architectural type, arcades can be traced back to Roman market installations, which often consisted of a rectangular town square serving countryfolk as a place for the sale of their products.

The square was surrounded by buildings with vaulted arches where various merchants offered their products and handicrafts. There are more than 6 km of arcades in the old town and its streets. They date from the time when the City Council allowed merchants and craftsmen to cover their places of work and stalls in front of their houses.
