The town, whose name possibly derives from the Greek "spaolithos" ("detached" or, according to others "broken" stone) rose on the remains of an Umbrian settlement, and entered the orbit of Rome in the 3rd century B.C.

A great part of the Italian history can be perceived from the town's history: from the Bronze Age to the present times, from the Roman period to the barbarous invasions, from the Lombard dukes to the Popes' government, until the Risorgimento.

Aware of its past, the town maintains its best evidences in the museums and through its monuments.

Through the scenic stairway that descends into Piazza Duomo, you arrive at the Cathedral, that reconciles the Romanesque and the Renaissance in harmony. The façade, enlightened by Solsterno's mosaic, is preceded by a Renaissance portico. Inside the church there are many valuable works, among which the outstanding cycle of frescoes on the apse by Filippo Lippi and the chapels "Eroli" and "dell'Assunta", with frescoes by Pinturicchio.

Among the various admirable evidences of the past, you have the Ponte delle Torri, built at the end of the 14th century, possibly on the remains of a Roman aqueduct, and the Rocca Albornoziana, a mighty structure built by Pope Innocenzo 4th by the half of the 14th century, to strengthen the complex defensive system of the State of The Church.

In the vast area around Spoleto, many are the places by the great historical/artistic importance.

Castel Ritaldi, risen in the 13th century on the site of a Roman settlement, is nowadays an important enogastronomic and agricultural centre. Just North of the village, it is possible to visit the parish church of San Gregorio (12th century).

The village, in panoramic position, maintains the characteristic quasi-circular castle layout. Inside there is the parish church with remarkable 16th-century-old frescoes.

The Fonti del Clitunno are a truly interesting place to visit.

Close to Campello sul Clitunno, the springs of the river by the same name originate a small lake that owes its aspect to works that date back to the 18th century, yet it was very famous from time immemorial. Then its waters were quite more abundant, so that you could go upstream to address the oracle of the Clitunno, god of the river, to whom a temple was dedicated and oxen were sacrificed.

The sacredness of the area is also testified by the close-by Tempietto, unusuale buildin for the Christian cult, built following the model of the classic Pagan temple, above a podium that looks over the river.

The Umbrian Valley, a.k.a. Spoleto Valley, between Monteluco and the Monti Martani, is a territory by the wide, diversified archaeological, historical and artistic features.
Besides picturesque castles and splendid monuments, you may still perceive the long-lasting
integrity of the relation with the surrounding environment, a true symbiosis between inhabited centres and nature.

Giano dell'Umbria, on the Monti Martani, was once dominated by the Dukedom of Spoleto, then it passed under the State of the Church. The olive oil and wines produced there are among the most appreciated ones in Umbria. Outside the small town, there is the abbey of San Felice (12th century).
